RIVER PARTNERS PROGRAM

The Kalamazoo River

The Kalamazoo River is beautiful, from its headwaters in Hillsdale County to where it empties into Lake Michigan at Saugatuck. The waters of the river are as old as the earth itself. This 135-mile waterway has over 1,200 miles of tributaries and about 3,000 square miles of watershed. The forests, fields, grasslands, and wetlands surrounding the 10,000 year old river basin have been home to may wildlife species.

Unfortunately, from about 1930 through the 1950s, human contact with the Kalamazoo River included the dumping of industrial waste, leading eventually to its designation as a Superfund cleanup site. Citizen, government, and industry efforts to clean up the river have produced a resurgence of beauty and have improved water quality .

The mission of the River Partners Program is to work with people from all walks of life to help insure a healthy future for the Kalamazoo River through the promotion of river awareness and education, river enhancement and sustainable development, and river protection and cleanup. Further, we seek to become a place where common ground may be found, diversity welcomed, and river problems may find solutions.

Please visit the Davis Creek Watershed site to learn about an exciting watershed partnership which was initiated through the River Partners Program. Davis Creek is a sub-watershed to the Kalamazoo River located in the heart of Kalamazoo County.
