Brownfield Redevelopment Resource Directory
Definition
| Abandoned, idle, or
under-utilized industrial and commercial properties where
expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or
perceived environmental contamination. |
Goal
| Putting a property to a new
use where an old business once operated makes good
economic and environmental sense. Communities can
be revitalized by the cleanup of contamination, new
development and renewal of civic pride. Undue urban
sprawl can be minimized if properties are redeveloped
where infrastructure already exists. The challenge
is to find solutions that will protect human health and
natural resources by providing incentives for
redevelopment. The
goal is to enhance our quality of life through
sustainable development. |
Brownfield
Redevelopment Financing Act
| The City of Kalamazoo has taken action to utilize
new state legislation which allows for tax capture to
test and clean brownfield sites throughout the
City. The Brownfield Redevelopment Authority will
also enable the City to provide significant credit for
taxpayers who invest on designated brownfield sites. |
